Friends of the Library Fall Lecture

Lecture/Readings

The Science of Animal Personality
You know your dog has a personality different than other dogs. You know a cat could have a personality too. Everyone expects primates, so similar to humans, to display distinct, measurable differences in temperament. But what about less familiar species from dolphins to bluebirds to crabs to spiders, flies, and even single-celled organisms? More importantly: Why? Why is personality so pervasive in the animal world? Shivik surveys research on a broad range of species and examines the importance of individual personalities to humans and evolution.
Join us for the Friends of the Library Fall Lecture presented by John Shivik.

Lecture/Readings

As part of the centennial celebration of the end of World War I, this presentation will look back at how the "war to end all wars" impacted Utah through the lens of the Utah Agricultural College and Cache Valley. While enlistment frenzies drained the campus of men and left female students preparing to form a "Legion of Death" in case of German invasion, civilians on the home front dealt with anti-German sentiment, an influx of outsiders training at the newly expanded college, Victory Gardens on Old Main Hill, and the devastation of the Spanish influenza epidemic. Presenter Emily Wheeler is a USU alumna with degrees in history and landscape architecture.
