Earth Day Celebration

Special Event | Home, Family, and Food

Join us for Earth Day 2019! We are partnering with localorganizations to provide an evening of family friendly, fun-filled, Earth loving activities!

3:30 - 7 pm Earth/nature focused touch tables, crafts, and hands-on activities. Enjoy information tables, displays, and activities like blender bikes, sustainable gardening, reuse art, animal conservation games, and green energy displays from local non-profits!

4:30 - 6:30 pm Join the Swaner staff to clean up trash that has made its way onto the Preserve over the Winter. Remember to bring work gloves, sturdy footwear, and to dress for the weather.

All volunteers who participate in the Earth Day Clean Up will be entered in an opportunity drawing for fun and sustainable prizes from sponsors like PROBAR, Chums, Stasher, Smartwool, Bee's Wrap, and Wowe Lifestyle!

Avian Adventures

$20 for non-members | $10 for members

The first of four birding tours on the Swaner Preserve in 2019! Legendary Utah birder, Kenny Frisch, will guide us on an early morning excursion to view and identify resident and migratory feathered friends on the Preserve. Please be sure to wear hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, and be prepared for uneven soggy ground.

We will provide binoculars for each attendee, or bring your own if you have a pair you prefer.

Wetland Pond BioBlitz

Join us for a City Nature Challenge biobltiz at Swaner’s Wetland Ponds. All the observations you make will count toward the 2019 City Nature Challenge and help to guide the management of the Swaner Preserve. Learn more about the City Nature Challenge at nhmu.utah.edu/challenge.

Help with the iNaturalist app. Access to our field guide library. Guided iNaturalist observation walk to Swaner’s Wetland Ponds. Meet at the EcoCenter then head out to the ponds located on the private south side of the Preserve.

Night Sky Navigation Workshop

Join us for an introductory workshop in night sky navigation! Paul Ricketts, Director of the University of Utah's Observatory, will guide us in learning to use star maps to locate objects in a telescope. We will have 5 telescopes available so everyone has the opportunity to gain hands-on experience.

Note - Our previous 3 attempts at holding this event have been cancelled due to cloud cover! We hope that spring will bring clearer skies, but please check your email the afternoon of the event in case we have to cancel and refund you.

Some favorites include snowshoeing on the Preserve, interacting with live reptiles and amphibians, upcycling old materials into holiday decorations, and much more!
