Jazz Night at Elite Hall

Dance the night away at Elite Hall at 83 West Main Street in Hyrum, Utah with live big bands, dinner catered by Firehouse Pizzeria, and dance instruction from the USU Big Band Swing Club! Jazz Night at Elite Hall features the USU Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble directed by Max Matzen and Greg Wheeler. Free dance instruction provided by the USU Big Band Swing Club every night one hour prior to the event at 6:00 p.m.

Chamber Music Society of Logan: Danish String Quartet

The Danish String Quartet performs with high technical and musical quality, incorporating the joy of playing. The powerful impact the Quartet makes on stage and its fresh approach to familiar repertoire have become its trademarks and reasons the Quartet has won multiple competitions in Europe and the USA. The three Danes met as pre-teens at a summer music camp, and they and one Norwegian cellist have been playing together for a decade. In addition to the classical chamber repertoire, they play and compose Scandinavian folk music.

Wind Orchestra

The Wind Orchestra, the "flagship ensemble" of the USU Bands, is a 45-member ensemble of the finest wind and percussion players in the school. Conducted by Director of Bands Thomas P. Rohrer, it plays the finest in contemporary wind music as well as time-tested standards from the band repertoire. The Wind Orchestra performs three concerts each semester, and entrance is gained to the ensemble by audition at the outset of each semester. The ensemble has performed at the Utah Music Educators Convention and the College Band Directors National Association Western Division Conference.

Wassermann Festival: Dang Thai Son

An outstanding international musician of our time, Vietnamese - Canadian pianist Dang Thai Son was propelled to the forefront of the musical world in October 1980, when he was awarded the First Prize and Gold Medal at the Xth International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. It was also the first time that a top international competition was won by an Asian pianist.

The USU Department of Music is thrilled to present its three-part visiting artist and scholar series, The Singer As…, where we explore the various career paths of professional singers. The second installment, The Singer As… Scientist features internationally recognized voice teacher Dr. Scott McCoy. Dr. McCoy teaches at The Ohio State where he is Voice Area Head and also director of the Helen Swank Voice Lab. Dr. McCoy is also author of the pedagogy textbook Your Voice: An Inside View. This master class is free and open to the public.

Chamber Music Society of Logan: Minetti String Quartet

The Minetti Quartett is a rising star of classical chamber music with a focus on Schubert, Haydn, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, along with music of the 20th century. These four Austrian musicians have performed at concert halls throughout Europe and at chamber music festivals all over the world. For its 15th anniversary, the Quartett began its own cycle of concerts at Vienna’s newest venue, the MuTh concert hall. They will continue this successful series through the 2018/19 season. A newly recorded CD with 20th century music and concert tours in Europe and America further highlight this season.

Music Scholars Series with Dr. Roland John Wiley

Dr. Roland John Wiley is an American musicologist, instructor and consultant whose main area of focus is on 19th century Russian music and ballet. He has written a biography and critical study on the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and contributed the entry on the composer in the 2001 edition of the "New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians." His current project is a study of choreographer Marius Petipa.

Jazz Combos

Concert featuring USU student jazz combos, directed by Professors Corey Christiansen, Max Matzen, Braun Khan, and graduate assistant Parker Speirs. The combos will be performing sets comprised of well-known jazz standards and original compositions and arrangements. Jazz combos allow students to develop the skills of improvisation and musical interaction within a small group format.

Music Scholars Series: Brad Osborn

Brad Osborn is a assistant professor of music theory at the University of Kansas. He is the author of "Everything in its Right Place: Analyzing Radiohead." Adapting a psychology-based approach known as ecological perception, the book demonstrates how Radiohead's music means what it does to listeners with varying degrees of prior experiences in common practice tonal music and post-millennial rock music is published in top theoretical journals and he has spoken at conferences internationally. He writes and records under the moniker D'Archipelago, a "band" composed entirely of him overdubbing all of the vocal and instrumental tracks.

Celebrate Tax Day with the USU guitar ensembles on April 15. The guitar ensembles have been a part of the USU music department fabric for almost 40 years and are known for delivering a night of eclectic music. The guitar naturally transcends genre and the SUU guitar ensembles aim to showcase the versatility of the instrument. Everything from jazz to rock, classical to folk music can be heard performed by both the electric and acoustic guitar ensembles.
