2017 Spring Runoff Conference Focuses on Data-Driven Water Management

'Data-driven Water Management for an Uncertain Future' is the theme for USU’s 2017 Spring Runoff Conference March 28-29. All are invited.

The Utah State University Water Initiative hosts its annual Spring Runoff Conference March 28-29 at the university’s Eccles Conference Center. “Data-driven Water Management for an Uncertain Future” is the theme for the 2017 gathering. All are invited.

“We welcome participation from every college at USU,” says Nancy Mesner, professor in USU’s Department of Watershed Sciences and conference coordinator. “The purpose of the conference is to share diverse water research across disciplinary boundaries.”

Featured speakers include hydrologist Brian McInerney of Salt Lake City’s National Weather Service office, who offers a forecast of the current water year; Laura Vernon of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, who discusses the Great Salt Lake’s fluctuating water levels, along with Joshua Palmer of the Utah Division of Water Resources, who will address water conservation in Utah.

Student participation in the gathering is $25 for two days or $15 for one day. Cost to professionals is $75 for both days or $40 for one day. Online registration is available at the conference website

All are invited to a reception and research poster session Tuesday evening from 3:45-10 p.m. at the Logan Country Club, 710 N. 1500 East in Logan. The gathering highlights water research by student, faculty, staff and professional conference participants. The session features two-minute ‘lightening round’ presentations by participating researchers from 3:45-5 p.m., followed by a reception offering hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks and a cash bar. A student research awards ceremony begins at 8 p.m.

Wednesday morning’s session opens with the plenary “Robust Decision-Making in a World of Uncertainty.” The conference culminates from 1-4:30 p.m. with the 2017 J. Paul Riley American Water Resources Association Utah Section Student Paper Competition

The USU Water Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory, the USU Ecology Center, the colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and the Quinney College of Natural Resources and the Huntsman School of Business. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout the campus and community.
