The Status & Experiences of Utah Women of Color

Panel Discussion/Presentation

The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you to join us for our first Fall Women’s Leadership Forum.

As Utah continues to become more diverse, it is critical that we understand the status and experiences of girls and women within all social and identity groups – including race and ethnicity. To this end, the Utah Women & Leadership Project published five research snapshots that documented the available data on Utah women in the following ethnic/race categories: Pacific Islander, Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaskan Native. The UWLP team also hosted 11 community conversations—two for women in each of these categories and one with New American women. These were then summarized in a series of short reports. This event brings together accomplished women who represent each race/ethnic group to share and discuss these reports and their own observations, experiences, and insights being women of color in the state. This panel will also discuss how to best move forward to support and empower girls and women of color in Utah.

Register to attend.

LAEP Speaker Series: Patty Stevens

Lecture/Readings

"Towards Regenerative Place Making" The “Story of Place” is an inquiry framework used by regenerative development practitioners to identify the inherent potential of a place. By engaging a community in collaboratively unearthing the unique story of a place, we can build community cohesion around a common purpose. Patty will share how her land planning and design practice has evolved towards regenerative placemaking through a series of pivotal park and open space projects in northeast Ohio. She will illustrate how developing an authentic story of a place and integrating interpretation with physical improvements, reveals the story and builds place attachment. Grounded in the belief that place attachment can motivate positive environmental and societal change, her work suggests a need for a larger discussion about the value of place in our times and an expanded role for landscape architects as agents of regeneration.

Don’t Be Reviewer 2: How to Review for Scholarly Journals and Conferences

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Almost every academic discipline engages in scholarly peer review. Peer review is high stakes work; reviewer feedback influences (often determines) whether manuscripts are published, and for many academics, keeping their job depends on publishing their scholarship. In other words, peer reviews have material, professional consequences. It’s surprising, then, that scholars are rarely trained in how to be a good reviewer. In this workshop led by Rebecca Walton, you’ll learn a practical heuristic for providing peer review feedback that is inclusive, helpful, and appropriate.

safeTALK: Suicide Prevention Training

Workshop/Training

RSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfdvbanMHGokn7xLCbLqcaE6g0Qgk6nrAx7Pk5HOO5Id_GanQ/viewform
------
SafeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. SafeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST. SafeTALK is designed to create many more suicide alert helpers in the community than intervention helpers and create a suicide safer community.

Your trainer will be UNHS Behavioral Staff member Niki Olsen LCMHC. We know that suicide prevention is something, “Everybody plays a role in.” We believe this training is similar to CPR in the sense that the more people that receive this training the more lives will be saved.
