Critical Components that Propel Women’s Careers

Panel Discussion/Presentation

The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you step into a world of inspiration and empowerment by joining our 2025 ten-part webinar “Women in Leadership Executive Speaker Series.” This series is a celebration of dynamic and influential women who have shattered the glass ceiling landscape in Utah. For our first webinar in this series, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a discussion with Dr. Sydnee Dickson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Michelle Love Day, Director of the Language & Culture Services Department for Jordan School District. This panel discussion will focus on a variety of critical elements that can propel women’s careers forward. First, successful women leaders are avid self-improvers and lifelong learners, while also being willing to support and develop other women toward leadership roles as well. Second, women often need to work past challenges like reluctance to claim achievement, perfectionism, and letting go of judgment. And finally, it is always important to remember our own journeys toward leadership and the influence of others along the way. Join this webinar to learn about women in leadership, particularly within the state of Utah.

Utah Symphony in Logan Brahms' Violin Concerto with Augustin Hadelich

Arts/Entertainment

The Caine College of the Arts is thrilled to present the Utah Symphony for a special one-night-only performance, bringing world-class artistry to Logan right here in the heart of our campus. Enjoy an unforgettable evening of breathtaking live music with this unique opportunity—free for all USU students, faculty, and staff, and only $10 for the general public.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the symphonic beauty of the Utah Symphony, exclusively brought to you by the Caine College of the Arts!

EVENT OVERVIEW:

The breathtaking Brahms Violin Concerto showcases the full range of the violin, from tender lyricism to exhilarating virtuosity. Augustin Hadelich, regarded as one of today’s top violinists, brings detailed nuance to this work, and highly sought-after conductor Elim Chan leads the intricate interplay between soloist and orchestra.

Immerse yourself in the dreamlike melodies of Ogonek’s Moondog, representing the silver halo around the moon, and embrace the rich tapestry of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, the last work he ever composed. Hear echoes of Rachmaninoff’s past compositions, woven into the fabric of the music like hidden gems. These nostalgic references add to the depth, inviting you to uncover the composer’s musical legacy with each passing phrase.

The Impact of Sexism on Women’s Careers

Panel Discussion/Presentation

The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you to join us for our third webinar in the 2025 Women in Leadership Executive Speaker Series with this one focused on the impact of sexism on women’s careers. Sexism is defined as referring to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on gender. Sexism can take many forms, some overt and some more subtle. Speaking up against sexism can be a powerful force for reducing gender inequity and arming women and girls (and male allies) to identify and address sexism in their workplaces is important. Being prepared about how to respond to everyday sexism can help women feel more confident in their interactions with others. By raising awareness of the widespread occurrence and damaging effects of sexist language, comments, beliefs, and behaviors, we hope to reduce the frequency of sexism in our homes, neighborhoods, communities, and the state.

CHaSS Book Proposal Charrette

Workshop/Training

In the Fall, CHaSS Research hosted a workshop with Darrin Pratt, Director of the University of Colorado Press. Pratt shared best practices for academic press book proposals. To follow up on the advice provided during this workshop, we will be offering a charrette - a hands-on, collaborative peer review - specifically focused on in-progress book proposals. Who: Participation in the charrette is by application and is limited to 12 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. Preference, however, will be given to early career scholars and those soon seeking promotion. Workshop format: Faculty will be split into small groups based upon their interests and backgrounds. Each faculty member will share their book proposal (in the stage or format that it’s in) prior to the workshop with their group to receive targeted feedback. Participants will each review 1 or 2 book proposals. The workshop will also include an overview of “best practices” for book proposals and summary remarks. LAEP Speaker Series: David Anderson, What Can Landscape Architecture Do for the Environment and Our Humanity

Lecture/Readings

About the Lecture How can we display genuine empathy, grace, and compassion toward ourselves and others – and the natural world around us? Humans are reliant on the environment for essential resources and services. In the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, landscape architecture plays a unique and critical role that, through design, addresses the social needs, fundamental rights, and wellbeing of people, while stewarding care and renewal of ecological systems. Speaker Bio Dave is a Professional Practice Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) at USU where he has teaching and Extension assignments. Dave leads instruction of the department’s Introduction to Landscape Architecture course, the largest of its kind in the U.S. with over 1,000 students taught annually. He teaches University Connections to incoming freshmen and has taught Foundations of Sustainable Systems, Land Planning for Residential Development, co-taught the Leadership in Planning and Design – a Capstone studio for LAEP seniors, and currently instructs the Analysis and Design I studio.

Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Biologist Jessica Habashi

Panel Discussion/Presentation | Science Unwrapped

Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." Jan 24 Speaker: Jessica Habashi is a champion of undergraduate research. Some years ago, the biologist noted a real-world program at the USU Brigham City campus and saw it not only as a challenge to be investigated, but as a meaningful research experience for students. The challenge? Bird-window collisions on the Brigham City campus. Bird-window collisions are often not though about as a major problem, Habashi says, yet the phenomenon is threatening bird populations worldwide. Habashi and are students are studying how often these mishaps occur and how to mitigate them. In the process, Habashi is teaching scholars how to design, organize, fund, conduct and present scientifically valid research projects.

MUSES

Arts/Entertainment

The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. Additionally, attendees may have the opportunity to get involved first-hand with our interactive lobby experience before the performance. For more information, visit www.usumtsa.weebly.com.

Five-Slide Friday

Workshop/Training

Five-Slide Friday is an informal get together over lunch on (some) Fridays where faculty and students from the Department of Data Analytics and Information Systems can present about their education, field of study, work experience, academic research, ASC project, new favorite data tool, etc. and answer questions. The objective is to help ease the friction that naturally occurs in interdisciplinary settings while helping both faculty and students learn and retool. Bring your lunch and, if you're presenting, remember that you can't prepare more than five slides!
