For our fourth webinar in this series, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a discussion with Kacie Malouf, co-founder of Malouf Companies, co-owner of Downeast, and co-founder of the PHASE Alliance and the Malouf Foundation, along with Trina Limpert, CEO and RizeNext Corp. and co-founder of Tech-Moms. Both women have been founders and CEOs and have impressive backgrounds in creating nonprofits. They have also managed and prioritized life so they can achieve success at work. Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Biologist Jessica Habashi

Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." Jan 24 Speaker: Jessica Habashi is a champion of undergraduate research. Some years ago, the biologist noted a real-world program at the USU Brigham City campus and saw it not only as a challenge to be investigated, but as a meaningful research experience for students. The challenge? Bird-window collisions on the Brigham City campus. Bird-window collisions are often not though about as a major problem, Habashi says, yet the phenomenon is threatening bird populations worldwide. Habashi and are students are studying how often these mishaps occur and how to mitigate them. In the process, Habashi is teaching scholars how to design, organize, fund, conduct and present scientifically valid research projects.
The Impact of Women’s Health on Work and Life

For our fifth webinar in this series, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a panel discussion with Dr. Julie Hanks (a licensed therapist, coach, author, relationship expert, media contributor, blogger, speaker, and performing songwriter) and Dr. Audrey A. Jiricko (OBGYN and Senior Medical Director for Women’s Health for Intermountain Health). This conversation will focus not only on the importance of women’s mental and physical health and how it impacts overall wellbeing, but also how it impacts career advancement at work, relationships at home, and engagement in the community. This discussion will also focus on why Utah ranks as one of the worst states for women’s preventative healthcare, mammography and depression rates, and violence against women, along with what can be done to change this. Dr. Madsen will also ask questions related to some of the most pressing needs in Utah and how to prioritize this work at the individual, organizational, and systems levels to ensure positive change. And finally, Drs. Hanks and Jiricko will discuss their own passions, careers, and decision to make this work a priority in their lives. Join this webinar to learn about women’s health and wellbeing.

Building Bridges: Leading as Women in Local Government

For our seventh webinar in this series, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a discussion with Michelle Kaufusi, Mayor of Provo City, and Dawn Ramsey, Mayor of South Jordan City. This conversation will begin with a focus on why the panelists are passionate about leading in such dynamic and complex settings, along with what brings them joy in doing such work. As they share stories about their career paths, they will also discuss what elements they find most challenging and inspiring at the same time. This webinar focuses on one woman leader who has made a difference in Utah and beyond for decades. Dr. Susan R. Madsen will interview Gail Miller, co-founder and owner of the Larry H. Miller Company and chair of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation. Considered a female pioneer in the business world, Gail credits her mother for teaching her what courage is, a lesson she would lean on after Larry’s death in 2009. Gail became the leader of more than 80 companies, the family foundation, and even had the final say on who played on the Utah Jazz. Her courage, vision, and commitment to making a difference have amplified the Larry H. Miller Company’s legacy of business leadership, community building, and philanthropic giving throughout the state. Gail will share inspiring lessons she has learned from her unexpected journey. She will also share why she believes women have more opportunities than ever before to excel in business. Finally, Gail will share her thoughts on what it means to “live your life on purpose,” and how being intentional with resources, talents, and passion can be a catalyst for making a difference in the lives of others, and especially in your own.
Crossing the Divide: Making an Impact in Career and Community

Madsen will moderate a discussion with Jennifer Smith (Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Zions Bancorporation) and Lavonya Mahate (Entrepreneur, Restauranteur, and Community Builder). This conversation will begin with a focus on the panelists’ career development and advancement journeys, and how they—and women more generally—must redefine their identities along the way. This panel discussion will also focus on a variety of topics that relate to foundational skills and abilities that advance women’s careers and the positive impact they can have in community work as well. This includes such topics as how to claim your achievements as women, build rather than leverage relationship, enlist allies from the start, and bring other women along in the process. Next, guests will share their passions and work in the community and the causes and efforts they are involved in that lift and support other women. Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Geoscientist Josh Lively

Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." Feb 21 Speaker: Joshua “Josh” Lively, a geoscientist, evolutionary biologist and paleontologist, is a self-described dinosaur digger, Alabamian in Utah, birder, Auburn grad and jaded football fan. At USU Eastern, Josh is the curator of USU Eastern’s renowned Prehistoric Museum, and studies ecosystems of the Late Cretaceous period – the last 35 million years of the ‘Age of Dinosaurs.’ Using a combination of vertebrate paleontology, phylogenetics (how organisms are related), stratigraphy, sedimentology and osteology (anatomy and function of bone), he engages undergrad scholars in unlocking the pattern and process of evolution in the context of changing environments in the breathtaking landscapes of central and southern Utah and the Intermountain West.

March 21 Speakers: Biological engineer Elizabeth Vargis pursues study of Raman spectroscopy, muscular atrophy and subretinal tissue research. Vargis and undergraduate scholar Sophia Hessami are developing in vitro models of retinal pigment epithelial cells to better understand disease, test new treatments and build computer simulations to understand the role of growth factors. In the process, Hessami is developing skills and experience she plans to apply to graduate study in biological engineering.

April 11 Speakers: Mathematicians Matt Young, faculty member in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and undergraduate researcher Seth Porter, conduct research to define and compute algebraic invariants of knots in a three-dimensional vector space. A knot is an embedding of a circle into a three-dimensional space. A knot invariant is a quantity assigned to a knot that remains the same for any other knot that is topologically equivalent to it. Matt and Seth will “untangle” this concept, while explaining the benefits of getting involved in undergraduate research.
