About This Degree

The Master of Mathematics (MMath) is a professional masters degree (plan C) serving mathematics educators at the secondary (and sometimes tertiary) levels who want to broaden their background in Mathematics, Statistics, and pedagogy.

MMath graduates have excellent employment prospects in the Intermountain Region, usually as secondary teachers of math at public, private and charter schools but occasionally as post-secondary faculty at colleges or small universities.

Admission Requirements

MMath applicants are either trained as professional teachers or seeking a route to secondary mathematics licensure and endorsement in Utah. Applicants are expected to have strong background in mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, advanced calculus, and additional mathematical subjects (at least 24 semester credit hours of mathematics/statistics).

Application to the MMath program is through the USU School of Graduate Studies website.

Students must provide:

GRE general scores (subject exams not required). We look for Quantitative scores above 60% and Verbal scores above 40%, but the application process is competitive so higher scores may be neccessary be competitive with other applicants.
TOEFL or IELTS (unless you have earned a degree in an English-speaking country, e.g. US, UK or Canada). To qualify for a teaching assistantship in our department the total TOEFL iBT score must be 100 or above. IELTS must be at or above 6.5 for TA consideration.
Transcripts of all past coursework. Your GPA *must* be above 3.0 during the last two years, and *should* be above 3.5 in technical subjects.

International students have additional admissions requirements.

All students in the MMath program must pass a written qualifying examination. Students may take these exams before beginning formal coursework in the program but must take them at or before the end of the first full year of matriculation.

Requirements:

The program requires the completion of 36 credits – at least 21 credits of which must be from courses offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, while remaining credits may come from the College of Education and Human Services as approved by an advisory committee. A qualifying exam in either Advanced Calculus (Analysis) or Mathematics Teaching is also required for this degree.

Courses:

Any 5000-level course in Mathematics and/or Statistics counts toward this degree. We often recommend Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematical Statistics, as these courses are particularly relevant in secondary mathematics and broadly applicable to mathematics teaching. We advise students to take a variety of courses for subject breadth – in pure math, applied math, statistics, and pedagogy.
