Research on Capitol Hill

Conference/Seminar

Research on Capitol Hill is a celebration of the undergraduate research conducted by students at Utah's two largest research universities, Utah State University and the University of Utah. Research on Capitol Hill provides an opportunity for legislators, the public, and students to interact and learn from one another. https://research.usu.edu/undergradresearch/roch/

Convergence of Smoothed Empirical Measures, with ML Applications by Dr. Kristjan Greenewald

Conference/Seminar

Abstract: Statistical distances, such as the KL divergence and Wasserstein distances, are powerful tools for measuring differences between probability distributions. Unfortunately, the sample complexity of estimating these distances often scales prohibitively poorly with increasing dimension. In this work, we study the convergence of the empirical measure smoothed by a Gaussian kernel to the true measure convolved with a Gaussian, as measured by various statistical distances.

Applied Mathematics Seminar: Solving and learning phase field models using the modified Physics Informed Neural Networks

Conference/Seminar

Speaker: Jia Zhao, Assistant Professor Department of Math & Statistics, USU

Abstract: Phase field models, including the Allen-Cahn type and Cahn- Hilliard type equations, have been widely used to investigate interfacial dynamic problems. Designing accurate, efficient, and stable numerical algorithms for solving the phase field models has been an active field for decades. In the meanwhile, developing reliable and physically consistent phase field models for applications in science and engineering have also been intensively investigated. In this talk, I will introduce some preliminary results on solving and learning phase field models using deep neural networks.

T4L Conference: Overcoming Distance, Disruption, and Distraction

Conference/Seminar

We are excited to announce the 5th annual Teaching for Learning (T4L) Conference co-hosted by Utah State University, Southern Utah University, and Brigham Young University. This year's conference outlines the many factors that are distracting our students and offers both practical and theoretical approaches to overcoming those obstacles. During this one-day conference, participants will have the opportunity to make connections with other instructors, take home great ideas for teaching, and stay current on research in teaching and learning.
